Dear Freedom of Information and Privacy Coordinator,

RE: FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST

I am formally requesting records held by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Surrey Detachment, under the Access to Information Act. I am requesting all records held by the drug squad about drug trafficking in Surrey between January 1st, 2019 and January 31st, 2023. I am in search of the following precise information:

• A record of all the apprehended individuals, including their names, the exact time, date, and location of the offense. Furthermore, kindly furnish details regarding the presence of any minors and the number of drugs associated with them, covering from January 1st, 2019 to January 31st, 2023.

Before fulfilling the request, kindly notify me in advance of any charges related to processing it. I am prepared to pay appropriate fees about the processing of this request, however, I kindly ask that you inform me of the complete expenses before proceeding.

I acknowledge that, in accordance with the Access to Information Act, you have an obligation to provide a response to my inquiry within a period of 30 days. In the event that you are unable to complete my request within the specified timeframe, kindly notify me of the delay, including the reasons for the extension and the anticipated date of completion.

Please furnish the information in a manner that is easily accessible and appropriate for examination, preferably in an electronic format, to my email address, specifically anujbibaan2003@gmail.com.

Please offer a comprehensive explanation for any exemptions or redactions made to the requested information. Include specific references to the relevant provision of the Access to Information Act that legally justifies the withholding.

Contact me at anujbibaan2003@gmail.com or (647) 673-7650 for any more details or information needed to proceed with this request.

I appreciate your consideration of this issue. I anticipate your response quickly.

Yours faithfully,

Anuj Bibaan

Explanation of request: As a resident of Surrey, I have seen that there are certain areas in Surrey, particularly Surrey Central, where there is a significant presence of individuals engaged in drug use. Furthermore, the legalization of drugs that took effect on January 31st, 2023 has piqued my curiosity regarding the amount of drug trafficking instances reported between January 1st, 2019, and January 31st, 2023. According to CBC News, the number of deaths resulting from the illicit use of drugs in 2020 saw a significant 74% increase compared to the figures from 2019. Furthermore, the legalization of drugs in certain areas can result in excessive consumption and ultimately lead to fatalities.

  1. Hi Anuj! Your request was very well done and I liked how specific the details of it was, which would lead to a finer quality of results. One way that you could improve is by stating how you believe this information might be helpful to citizens in your explanation for the request.

  3. Hlo anuj, nice topic for FOI request. but you font size for assignment is very small. your request is driven by concerns over increased drug-related deaths, evidenced by a 74% surge in 2020, as well as potential consequences of drug legalization, emphasizing the need for transparency in RCMP records to assess public safety implications.

    1. Hi Anuj! This was a very precise FOI request! Very informative and formal which I really like. One suggestion is because you mentioned the legalization that took place in January of 2023, it would be interesting to see the data from before the legalization in comparison to now, to see how that legalization has changed things.

  5. I really like your inclusion of requests for notification regarding full fees for the request and for a timeline/explanation of the 30day timeframe is exceeded. I think a little bit of tweaking to your formatting would strengthen the professional aesthetic of your letter: single space the header information instead of double spacing (name, address etc.), as well as reducing the large spaces between paragraphs. I noticed that in the space for a fax number, you included what appears to be an email address instead, so editing that to have the correct form of contact bext to each other would be beneficial.
